There are many different kinds of spiders in Australia, and new species are continually being found every day. In 2016, a new species of dolomedes, named after scientist Brian Greene, was described. Dolomedes is special since it is a hybrid of a sea monster and an arachnid that can breathe underwater.
The spider’s ability to find prey by detecting minute vibrations on the water’s surface is another intriguing characteristic.
Air that has been sucked up into the spider’s hair is breathed out via its abdominal lungs. Its preferred diet? Tadpoles, fish, and even frogs are examples of relatively large prey that Dolomedes can take down. It is so adept at searching for vibrations that it can distinguish between vibrations brought on by animals and those brought on by wind or a leaf dropping.
