When some construction workers were emptying the lagoon of the Rutland Water Nature Reserve as part of routine maintenance, they stumbled onto one of the most complete Sea dragon skeletons ever discovered. This led to the discovery of England’s largest and best-preserved fossil.
This ichthyosaur’s petrified remains, which date back a staggering 180 million years, were thought to be the first ones ever discovered in the nation.
The fossil, which reached around 10m in length and was impressively complete, is heralded as one of the most important discoveries in England.
