When the Italian military police’s Art Recovery Unit showed up and claimed that the antique coffee table belonged to a cruel and tyrannical Roman Emperor, Helen Fioratti’s antique coffee table that she had paid thousands of dollars for as a family heirloom became the center of attention.
Fioratti had been keeping a work of art taken from the opulent “pleasure boats” of the Roman emperor for 45 years in her Upper East Side apartment.
She had no idea that the coffee table’s history began with Caligula. Although the artifact is currently being delivered to Italy, Caligula still seems to be getting people into trouble.
